YES, IT’S FINALLY time to get excited. After two years of waiting (and one thoroughly confusing Christmas special) the fourth season of Sherlock is finally upon us.
But what’s going to happen to Sherlock, John and co? Here’s what we know so far.
Where do we pick things up?

In last year’s Christmas special The Abominable Bride, Sherlock came to the conclusion that Moriarty is still dead (despite beaming himself on to TV screens across Britain at the end of season four) but he knows “exactly what he’s going to do next”.
John is now married to Mary, and the pair have a baby – but will Mary’s ‘dark past’ continue to follow her around? And why is Mrs Hudson calling Mycroft a ‘reptile’ in the trailer?
Have there been any hints about what will happen in the new episodes?

As always, the details are pretty much under lock and key. The only thing we really know is that it will be dark, with writer Stephen Moffat saying all the characters will be “put through the mill”.
He also hinted that it could all go pear-shaped for Mary:
Fans are speculating that the first episode The Six Thatchers will be based on the Arthur Conan Doyle story The Adventure of the Six Napoleons, which features lots of Lestrade (yesss).

The second, The Lying Detective, is most likely a take on The Adventure of the Dying Detective, and Toby Jones’ villain Culverton Smith should play a big part. Other than that, we’ll have to wait and see…
Will we be getting another series?

Though the title of the last episode – The Final Problem – seems to say this is it, there are broad plans in place for a fifth season. However, Benedict Cumberbatch has said that we shouldn’t expect to see it any time soon:
When is it on?

The Six Thatchers will air on BBC1 at 8.30pm on New Year’s Day, with the rest going out over the next two Sundays. *happy dance*
