SPICE WORLD IS 20 years old this year. Yes, it’s been 20 years since the golden days of the Spice Girls,
When it was released in 1997, Spice World was a massive box office success, but panned by the critics. We’d like to revise that now, because it’s actually a masterpiece.
1. Some might say that the film was a pointless money-making vehicle, but they’re incorrect
How dare you, for one.
2. Without it, we wouldn’t have known that Victoria Beckham is an A+ actress
She is the dark horse of the film. Her comic timing is perfect.
3. And Geri can play Geri just, really really well
To think she would dramatically betray the group in just a year’s time.
4. Emma Bunton also does a magnificent job selling Chupa Chups
What a coincidence that special Spice Girls lollipops came out alongside the movie! *winks*
5. It covers pretty much every important theme
On the surface, it looks like a film about the Spice Girls having zany adventures on a tour bus. But actually, it’s about friendship, the dark side of fame, motherhood, fashion, and of course, the possibility of alien life on other planets.
There’s even a comment on the gossip press with a Richard Murdoch-esque character called Kevin McMaxford (played by a de-wigged Dame Edna Everage).
6. And easily passes the Bechdel Test
Um, blah blah blah. Girl Power! Feminism! D’you know what I mean?
7. Then there’s the fact that they managed to get every single person who was famous at the time to be in it
Elvis Costello, Elton John, Bob Geldof, Jennifer Saunders, Roger Moore, Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, Michael Barrymore as the glorious Mr Step.
The proudest moment of all of their careers, we’d dare to venture.
7. They went ALL out on the special effects
James Cameron could NEVER.
8. And magnificently 90s costumes
Those platform trainers on Mel B. How we craved them.
9. The bus is the model on which all buses must be judged for the rest of eternity
They all had their own special Sporty, Posh, Baby, Ginger, and Scary-themed areas. If you shared a bedroom with a sibling, you were probably dead jealous.
10. And Meat Loaf was the f**king bus driver
Meat Loaf! And they got him to say this line:
Hey man, I love these girls, and I’d do anything for them. But I won’t do that.
11. So it’s a relief that it’s finally getting the recognition it deserves
There were 20th anniversary screenings all over the world, and people unironically declare their love for it every day.
It’s only been 20 long years. But thank you Spice World. Thank you.
