MATTHEW O’BRIEN MIGHT just be Ireland’s biggest Star Wars fan.
Last month, RTÉ even made a documentary about how much he loves it. We then saw his reaction watching the trailer for the first time:
It was an emotional moment.
And it turns out that Disney had also taken notice of Matthew’s extreme love for Star Wars – because they got in touch and offered him two tickets to tonight’s premiere in Dublin.
Speaking to DailyEdge.ie, Matthew tells the story of how it came about:
Disney gave me a phone call to tell me they had two tickets for the premiere. They gave me an email to a special site to enter my details. They then sent them out to me in hard copy and they were Star Wars-themed. They looked so good I was tempted to frame them.
He’s pretty happy he was offered the chance to go along tonight:
I can’t wait for it. Nervous would be the best way to describe it though. I was there back in 1999 for the premiere of the reboot and it was massively disappointing – like, you don’t want them fecking up Harrison Ford’s character this time around. But I have faith it will be great – they have their heart in the right place.
Matthew has been avoiding spoilers all week in anticipation of his big night. But it’s one he will share with loads of others:
It’s a big night for the Star Wars community in Ireland. At the premiere there will be people I have interviewed for podcasts as well as friends and family.
With Dublin’s Spire turning into a lightsaber last night, the country seems to be embracing the Star Wars mania – and Matthew is delighted:
I was so proud that Ireland did that, it’s such a great thing. And with Domhnall Gleeson starring it’s an added Irish angle. I love his look in it too – he does us proud in every way.
Enjoy the night, Matthew. It’s going to be some experience.
