The two strangers that got married live on radio have already split up

After three days, they both agreed that the spark just wasn’t there.

THE WEDDING BETWEEN two strangers that got the whole nation talking has ended in heartbreak on their honeymoon.

Ann Marie and Nigel had come together as part of the Three Strangers and a Wedding experiment for iRadio - with their ceremony taking place live on air in June.

But just three days into the couple’s honeymoon in Turkey last week, they both agreed that the spark just wasn’t there.

Ann Marie has just arrived back in Ireland and told DailyEdge.ie what went wrong:

There was some small fighting and a little tension between us over there, so we had to be honest with each other and sit down for a chat.
We’re just home since yesterday and I’m feeling fine about it. It was disappointing but there was a lot of expectation on both of us. Not only from family and friends but from the two of us as well.

Speaking to DailyEdge.ie, iRadio’s Sandra Kirrane was on the honeymoon and gave an outsider’s perspective of what happened:

Unfortunately it didn’t really work out between them – the wedding was a beautiful day but on the honeymoon they decided not to stay together.

Nigel said the spark wasn’t there for him and that he didn’t want to continue. At first Ann Marie was upset – but they do get on as friends even now.

When the couple checked into the hotel in Turkey, Ann Marie says they decided that sleeping in the same room was the best way to proceed:

We were sharing a room on the honeymoon – twin beds though. I was actually supposed to be sharing with someone else but when we were checking in, that’s how it panned out.

But what was it like sleeping in a bedroom with a stranger/husband?

It was fine and it wasn’t that awkward. We were friends and we got on.

DailyEdge.ie spoke to Ann Marie on the Tuesday about how the honeymoon was going, but the very next day, as Kirrane details, the couple sat down for a chat:

They were getting on fine but it came to a head on the Wednesday. The pressure was on both of them and they decided not to continue.

Ann Marie was very invested in it from the start – she really wanted to find love – so everyone is disappointed that there was no fairytale ending.

The couple remain friends though – and even spent the whole Thursday of the honeymoon together after their decision to end it romantically. They have plans to meet up when home as well:

We’re still talking to each other, it’s a shame that it hasn’t worked out.

Both of us were in a unique position so it didn’t work out romantically – but we will be staying friends and I’ll hopefully go up to Dublin to see him.

The Three Strangers and a Wedding experiment was really Ann Marie’s story – as she was on air a lot in the run up to the ceremony talking to the various candidates to be the groom, as Sandra outlines:

The people got to know Ann Marie because she was on air so much – but she hasn’t been on since, as it’s just a little bit soon.

They really enjoyed the honeymoon and Turkey – Nigel just didn’t feel the spark was there. They did spend plenty of time together and there is no animosity about the split.

But Sandra says that, given how much effort Ann Marie put into the process, this also meant that the split might have hit her a little harder than Nigel:

I think Ann Marie felt it a little bit more than he did but they agreed that it was a mutual thing.

We dreamed of a fairytale ending to this social experiment for Ann Marie and Nigel – but it looks like we aren’t going to get it.

It just wasn’t meant to be :(
