IF YOU’VE BEEN watching The Rose of Tralee down the years while following Twitter at the same time, there is one thing for certain: a rake of people will compare it to The Lovely Girls Competition in Father Ted.
It’s so inevitable that there has been a deserved backlash against it:
It’s obvious, hackneyed, and there are better things to make jokes about given there are hours of intentional and unintentional comedy on show.
But it’s different when someone on stage makes a reference to it, as we saw last night.
Chloe McGrath was the Waterford Rose on the night, and early on in her chat with Dáithí she said a ~familiar~ phrase
“I was lucky enough to be selected as the Waterford Rose to represent the lovely girls watching the showing back at home”
Yes, she went there
This was a revelation
The big question remains: was it intentional?
Surely someone got on to her before and was just like:
Ah you should definitely slide in reference to “lovely girls” for the craic
On an eventful night, a meta Father Ted shoutout was very welcome
Yes, yes she did.
She’s done her county proud
*wipes away a single tear*
“I love me county”
