Here's everything we know so far about the second season of True Detective

Get excited.

WHILE NO AIRDATE has been confirmed as of yet and scripts aren’t even fully completed, some concrete details are finally beginning to emerge about the next season of True Detective.

And between plot details and casting, it’s shaping up to be very exciting.

Here’s everything we know so far.

1.  It will feature an all-new cast

While the first season featured Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, this season will feature an entirely new cast of characters and focus on a different murder. Farewell, Rust Cohle.

2. But it will have the same writer

As was the case with the first season, Nic Pizzolatto will write each episode of the new season.

3. It will centre around a murder in California.

Per The Wrap:

The second season of “True Detective” will follow the death of Ben Caspar, the corrupt city manager of a fictional California city who’s found brutally murdered amid a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that would forever change freeway gridlock in the state. Three law enforcement officers from different cities and branches of the government are tasked with finding out who did it. They soon discover their investigation has much broader and darker implications than they initially thought.

And because it wouldn’t be True Detective if there wasn’t some darkness, Caspar’s body is found to have Satanic symbols carved into his chest and it quickly comes to light that he may have had some involvement with the occult. Spooky.

4. Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, Vince Vaughn and Elisabeth Moss are all rumoured to be starring.

Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch are reportedly close to signing on to play the show’s lead detectives, while Vince Vaughn is poised to sign on to play the show’s chief anatagonist, “a thug-turned-businessman who’s working with a local mayor and his political cohorts to spearhead the construction of a high-speed railway system”.

Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss, meanwhile, is being eyed to play a hard-nosed female detective with a penchant for gambling and drinking. (Jessica Chastain had previously been considered for this role.)

5. It’s going to be more exciting than the first season.

HBO Programming President Michael Lombardo told television critics last month that he had read a few of this season’s scripts and said that they are “more exciting than the first season”.

Squee.

6. There will be several directors.

Last season, Cary Fukanaga directed each episode, but this season will see several directors enter the fold. Potentially among them? The Exorcist director William Friedkin.

Friedkin told The Playlist, “I am considering it. I like this writer [Nic Pizzolatto] very much. I’ve met him, and he’s the real deal as far as I’m concerned.”
