'I am pro-choice and always will be': Vogue Williams responds to criticism from pro-life Twitter users

Pro-life Twitter users find it “bizarre” that Vogue is both pregnant and pro-choice.

LAST MONTH, WHEN we were all recovering from the Paddy’s Day festivities, Vogue Williams made the surprise announcement that she was pregnant.

Fertility is a topic that Vogue has publicly discussed many times, so plenty of people were delighted for her.

Before Vogue became pregnant, she had been very vocal about her belief that pregnant people should have the right to make decisions about their own bodies.

Back in 2016, Vogue slammed Enda Kenny after he said that the people of Ireland had voted against abortion three times, despite the fact that a referendum had not been held since 1983, meaning that nobody younger than the age of 53 has ever had the opportunity to vote on Ireland’s restrictive abortion laws.

In her Sunday World column, Vogue wrote:

I am pro choice, which doesn’t mean I am for or against abortion. It means that I think any woman has the right to choose what to do with their own body, myself included.

And guess what? Vogue has decided to have her first child. Her stance on women’s rights didn’t suddenly change the split second that one of her eggs was fertilised.

Some people are struggling to get their heads around that.

Vogue welcomed the announcement of the upcoming referendum’s date (the 25th of May) on Twitter.

But one man  on Twitter responded:

You’re advocating choice for ending the life of a developing baby whilst you yourself carry a developing baby… How bizarre and unfair is that!!

Irish novelist John Boyne pointed out that it’s strange to think that a pregnant woman can’t be pro-choice.

Vogue joined John Boyne in explaining that you can be both pregnant and pro-choice.

Shortly after this exchange, Vogue shared this photo to Twitter:

She wrote:

Living in the UK has afforded me the right to do what I want with my own body. I look forward to the end of May so I am able to do the same in my beautiful Ireland.
