ONE OF IRELAND’S greatest sporting and cultural moments happened on this day 25 years ago.
That’s right, the nation held its breath and we beat Romania in the 1990 World Cup.
It was great. But we probably have less affection for the mortifying fashion choices like:
1. Jumpers with patches of pastel everywhere
Sported by a young Ray D’Arcy here on The Den in 1990. So much pastel, so little time to interview the President.
2. This hairstyle
Tom Dunne singing Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello with the most 1990 head of hair you will ever see.
3. Baggy stonewashed denim jeans
In this one celebratory scene from the Walkinstown roundabout – six people can be seen sporting the popular style. Given only nine people’s trousers are visible, this shows an enthusiastic loyalty to questionable baggy pale jeans by the Irish public in 1990.
4. The humble oversized flowery shirt
Caught during these World Cup celebrations in Balbriggan. Epic.
5. Patterned ties were all the rage
6. Ill-fitting jacket and tie combinations
As shown off to the world by our Eurovision entry for 1990:
The shot from the side shows just how poorly fitted jackets were in 1990:
7. Jerseys. Jerseys everywhere
Beautiful.
8. Gas World Cup headgear
Something, anything, on your head so everyone knew you were backing the boys in green.
9. The glasses
WHY?
10. Subtle Italia 90-themed t shirts
The more oversized the graphics, the better.
11. “Classy” evening wear looked something like this
Sensational.
A good time was certainly had by all.
