9 reasons why Mattress Mick is a national treasure

Our hero.

THERE IS NO denying that Michael ā€œMattress Mickā€ Flynn is one of the most extraordinary people in Ireland. Mick is inspirational for many, many reasons.

1. One of the first noticeable things about Mick is that heā€™s got a great sense of humour

He doesnā€™t take himself seriously and he doesnā€™t sell peas.

2. Heā€™s always gracious and humble

Yes, he is thanking the real Sonic the Hedgehog for following him on Twitter.

3. Heā€™s just like the rest of us

He goes to workmans. Yes, it was for The Alison Spittle Show, but letā€™s just appreciate the fact that he was in there.

He was just as invested in the pintbaby as everyone else.

Maybe he was even a pintbaby himself.

4. Heā€™s innovative

I was totally unaware that it was possible to get an anti bedbug mattress, but heā€™s got his finger on the pulse when it comes to the mattress industry.

He also wants to invent a bed made of wine.

5. Like some kind of north-side Kardashians, everyone in his familyā€™s first name begins with the letter ā€˜Mā€™

His wife is Margaret and his two daughters are named Michelle and Marina.

6. Heā€™s endlessly creative and willing to try anything to help his business

Songs, music videos, movies, Photoshopped posters. Mickā€™s done it all.

7. On a much more serious note, Mick genuinely cares about helping the less fortunate

The philosophy that steered Mick towards selling mattresses is that everyone has to go to bed.

He firmly believes that the two most important things in life are your shoes and your bed because you are always in either one or the other.

For Mick this meansĀ everybody, not just those who can afford it. That is why he donated 40 beds to Apollo house in 2016.

He even spent Christmas Day there.

8. Heā€™s working with the Marie Keating Foundation

Heā€™s hoping to raise enough to help 12 families through the foundations Comfort Fund. Thisā€™ll be used to cover things like hospital and prescription costs and fuel to help families and patients focus on recovering.

9. Heā€™s not afraid to open up

Last year Mick shared this very sad and personal story last year with Humans of Dublin.

This post revealed to many that Mick is so much more than the eccentric mattress man on posters all over the city.
