CHANNEL 4′S WIFE Swap hasn’t been on TV for years, but last night they brought it back for a once off special – based specifically on the Brexit divide.
The premise is simple enough: get one family that are staunch remainers and another that voted to leave the EU last year and blend them together.
What could possibly go wrong?
Kat, Roger and Sophie were the designated Remain voters – and they were all in
German-born Kat is a Green Party councillor and there is no doubting her Remain credentials.
Pauline, Andy and Katy were the Leave family and they were similarly passionate about their views
And the voiceover at the start really bigged this one up:
“Tonight, the 52% and the 48% meet slap bang in the middle”
That’s exactly how it worked out.
Within about 30 seconds of Kat arriving to meet Andy they had got into a massive argument about immigration and benefits
This was bound to happen.
Pauline’s first dinner at the Remain home was even more dramatic. She was asked straight up why she voted to leave:
“Political correctness gone mad”
A fellow diner wasn’t particularly pleased with that being given as a reason:
Political correctness gone mad is also known as not being bloody rude.
And another friend of the family from Germany then recounted some of the problems she has faced since the referendum last June
Perhaps the most dramatic moment of the night came when the rules switched – and Leave voter Pauline could implement changes in the Remain house. Immediately, she whipped out a framed photo of Nigel Farage
Well.
And stuck it up on the wall
Their faces were a picture
And the daughter had a good line:
At least we don’t eat in here
It was an ~interesting~ item to own
Meanwhile, Kat replaced the Leave house’s England bunting outside with EU flags
Before leaving, Pauline hid this demented-looking Nigel Farage figurine in the Remain garden
WHAT.
When Kat returned home she clocked the Farage photo on the mantelpiece and took no time in sorting it out
Straight into the fire.
As was bound to be the case, many viewers thought it didn’t represent either side of the debate well – particularly the Leave side
As entertaining as it was, you’d have to be glad this isn’t on every week – people couldn’t handle the stress
And the drama.
