A Cork artist is drawing the leaders of the 1916 Rising, comic book-style

Will Sliney draws for Marvel Comics, but he’s turned his attention to a different kind of superhero.

CORK ARTIST WILL Sliney has worked on many Marvel Comics projects, including Spider-Man 2099, Secret Wars and Fearless Defenders.

However earlier this week, he turned his attention away from superheroes, drawing the leaders of the 1916 Rising as comic book characters.

He started on Friday with Michael Collins:

Then added James Connolly, Éamon de Valera, Padraig Pearse and Countess Markievicz:

He asked his Twitter followers for suggestions on who to draw next – those included Thomas Clarke, Roger Casement, Joseph Plunkett and Grace Gifford, who was herself a cartoonist.

As of last night, he’s drawn 15 of the key figures from the Rising (including Thomas McDonagh, Éamonn Ceannt and Elizabeth O’Farrell), and intends to add a few more.

When it’s completed, Sliney says he will put a high-resolution version of it online for free for anyone who wants to make a print.

Sound! Keep an eye on his Twitter here for updates.
