THE YEAR WAS 2007.
The Departed was the year’s big movie. Beyoncé was trying to carve out a career in film. Barack Obama was basically a nobody. Innocent times.
So, what were the Oscars like? Let’s take a trip down memory lane.
1. Ellen DeGeneres hosted and carried around an Oscar statue in a baby carrier.
2. Forest Whitaker, Jennifer Hudson, Helen Mirren and Alan Arkin were the night’s big acting winners for their performances in The Last King of Scotland, Dreamgirls, The Queen and Little Miss Sunshine, respectively.
3. Martin Scorsese finally won his first Best Director Oscar for The Departed.
4. Ryan Gosling was nominated for his first ever Oscar for Half Nelson and looked a little something like this.
5. Abigail Breslin, star of Little Miss Sunshine, walked the red carpet and got to shake hands with Meryl Streep.
7. She also got to present an award with a baby Jaden Smith.
Look at them! So tiny.
7. Beyoncé walked the red carpet in support of Dreamgirls.
8. And played second fiddle to eventual Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson.
Imagine that happening now. Unthinkable.
8. The late, great Peter O’Toole showed up wearing a frankly fabulous suit.
And flashed the peace sign to boot.
9. Kate Winslet and Celine Dion were reunited!
My heart will go ooooooooon
9. Michael Bublé and Emily Blunt were still very much an item
10. Helen Mirren walked the red carpet holding a miniature Union Jack
Taking her role as Queen Elizabeth a tad too seriously, perhaps.
11. Cameron Diaz had brown hair!
12. Anne Hathaway couldn’t stop hugging herself.
“Put on a jacket if you’re cold, Anne. You’re making me cold looking at you.”
13. Jennifer Lopez evidently slept with curlers in her hair, but still managed to look like red carpet royalty.
14. Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts, eternal BFFS, walked the red carpet hand in hand
15. Reese Witherspoon was like, “Heyiz!”
16. Jack Nicholson was like, “Get me the f**k away from this guy as quickly as possible.”
17. The Devil Wears Prada co-stars Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt presented an award together.
Be still our beating hearts.
18. Jack Black, John C. Reilly and Will Ferrell sang a very funny song about the experience of being a comedian at the Oscars.
19. Leonardo DiCaprio made faces while standing beside Al Gore.
20. The late Philip Seymour Hoffman presented an Oscar to Helen Mirren.
:(
21. Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson both wore weird little sunglasses.
22. Will Smith, Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio had pleasant chats in the audience.
Just like old pals do. You know yourself.
23. George Clooney wasn’t quite as grey as he is now.
24. And he had the bants with Cate Blanchett and Clive Owen backstage.
25. Spiderman was clearly still a thing
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
26. Meryl Streep wore a nice big statement Mam necklace.
27. Jennifer Hudson freaked out when she won her Oscar.
<3
28. Eddie Murphy was an Oscar nominee and a famously sore loser.
Murphy lost out on Best Supporting Actor to Little Miss Sunshine’s Alan Arkin and apparently “stormed out of the ceremony”. Yikes.
29. Penelop Cruz was a vision.
30. Steve Carell’s wife took a phone call on the red carpet.
Awkward.
31. Michael Sheen was giving off serious vampire vibes.
32. We still had Joan Rivers.
Miss you, Joan.
33. Finally… the cast of The Departed went wild when they won Best Picture.
Fist pumps! High fives! Kisses!
