IN A CONCLUSION that nobody saw coming, Moonlight was named Best Picture at last night’s Academy Awards – but only after La La Land was mistakenly given the Oscar.
An envelope mix-up saw Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announce La La Land as the night’s big winner. After a few moments on stage, producers informed the La La Land team that they had not in fact won and the award was eventually handed to the team behind Moonlight.
Not only was it was a thrilling, confusing finale, but it was a giant upset – La La Land was widely favoured to take Best Picture, having started the night with a record-tying 14 nominations.
The musical wound up winning six Oscars, including two for Best Director and Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Moonlight, a coming-of-age drama about a gay man in Miami won three awards overall, including Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Manchester By The Sea was one of the night’s other main winners with Casey Affleck picking up Best Actor and writer-director Kenneth Lonergan nabbing Best Original Screenplay.
The night’s other big winner was Viola Davis, who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Fences.
Unfortunately, there was no joy for the Irish with Ruth Negga losing out to Emma Stone in Best Actress and Consolata Boyle’s work on Florence Foster Jenkins missing out on Best Costume Design to Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.
