IF YOU’VE EVER been in need of some kind of inspiration in the deep dark hours of the night, a hotel in England may have a solution.
The enterprising owner of the Damson Dene Hotel in northern England has replaced all copies of the Bible with Fifty Shades of Grey.
Jonathan Denby said he had been convinced to make the switch by the huge popularity of the book. He said he had yet to read the erotic novel – “I’m not in the target audience” – but that he had heard it was a “ripping good yarn”.
[It] made me wonder about the sense of providing a book, the Gideon Bible which no-one reads, and many dislike, in the bedside cabinet of our hotel bedrooms, instead of a book which everyone wants to read, such as Fifty Shades of Grey.
Writing on his blog, Denby said it seems “distinctly odd that anyone would expect to find a religious book in a hotel bedroom” nowadays.
Not everyone is thrilled with the move: a vicar in the area told the local paper that it was a “great shame” and “very inappropriate” that the Bible had been replaced by an “explicit erotic novel”.
However for hotel guests who are not interested in reading the book and would prefer the more traditional bible, never fear – Denby is planning to keep a few copies of the Bible behind the reception desk for anyone who asks for a copy.
After reading our article this morning, a reader sent us this photo – taken at a Galway hotel earlier this week.
