'I am Irish': Modern Family's Sarah Hyland on the need to repeal the 8th Amendment

“I am a woman. I am Irish.”

IN JUST OVER two weeks the people of Ireland will go to the polls to vote on repealing the 8th Amendment.

With campaigns both for and against the Amendment’s repeal intensifying in recent weeks, a number of high-profile names have lent their support to the Pro-Choice side.

Indeed, over the weekend, Saoirse Ronan, Cillian Murphy, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, and Robert Sheehan among many others urged the people of Ireland to vote yes on May 25th.

And yesterday, Modern Family actress, Sarah Hyland, put her weight behind the Yes side, explaining the impact discussion born of the debate has had on her.

The 27-year-old star, who was diagnosed with kidney dysplasia as a child and has subsequently undergone ten surgeries including a kidney transplant, alluded to her own health problems in a Twitter post on Monday.

Sarah, who has Irish ancestry on her father’s side, made reference to the impact the current law would have on her if she was to live in Ireland, and placed her support behind the Pro-Choice campaign.

I am a woman. I am Irish. I have a slew of health complications that COULD put me in a situation where I would be forced to make a heartbreaking decision. If I was a resident of Ireland, the laws in place would kill me. I understand this all too well. #repealthe8th @Together4yes.

Sarah’s post has been liked more than 6,000 times since its upload, with many commentators throwing in cúpla focail while expressing their gratitude.

Go raibh míle maith agat @sarahhyland for speaking up for women & pregnant people in Ireland.  Ireland’s eighth amendment means that a foetus and mother have an equal right to life, which make abortion illegal except for in exceptional circumstances.
You absolute legend Sarah! Maith thú.
Go raibh míle maith agat Sarah! You’ve always been vocal for woman of every shape, origin, sensibility and guise… so as an Irish woman with health complications .. I Can’t tell ya how much your voice means. Please keep speakin out LOUD.
Your Irish sisters thank you, Sarah. Go raibh míle maith agat.
