9 things you do in the privacy of your own head
WE ALL HAVE our an internal monologue, our own personal stream of consciousness that chats away inside our head.
Sometimes this inside voice wanders away all by itself. Whether we’re bored, commuting or just plain lacking an attention span – our brains have funny ways of occupying themselves…
1. Answer back

In your head, you’ve told your boss to shove that report many times. You’ve told your mother to shut up, you’ve told your friend they’re being thick and you’ve told your significant other to get the boat.
Is there anything more satisfying than venting at someone in your head?
Well, doing it for real maybe…
2. Place some bets

Put on a few wagers with yourself. Go on, bet yourself that the kettle will be boiled before the ad break finishes. It’s the best, because you never really lose.
3. Race raindrops

Who will prevail? There can only be one!
4. Choreograph your iPod playlists

In your mind’s eye, you’re on stage in the O2, busting moves that Beyoncé would envy.
In reality, you are staring out the window on a bus.
5. Narrate your life
Our pick for narrator is definitely Morgan Freeman.

If you were in a movie, what song would be playing right now? What’s your theme tune? What’s the big plot arc to you getting stuck in traffic at the Red Cow Inn? What does it all mean?
6. Play “what if I just…?”

What if I just… threw my wallet off this escalator? What if I just… screamed out loud during this lecture? What if I just… pushed over that kissing couple? What if I just… cartwheeled across the office on my way to the vending machine? What if I just… threw myself downstairs at work to get to go home early?
7. Count your steps and avoid the cracks

It’s 159 paces to the office, and don’t forget to dodge that pesky crack in the path or else you’ve got to start all over again.
8. Get a song stuck in your head

It’ll be in there forever, we’re afraid. There’s no getting rid of it.
(Not until another song comes along, that is.)
9. Endure mental wallpaper

Every time your mind goes blank, your brain reverts back to what we call your “mental wallpaper” or “mental screensaver”.
It could be an embarrassing thing you said 10 years ago. It could be something small you can’t stop thinking about for no reason. Mental wallpaper, right there.
