THE ABBEY CENTRE left a lot to be desired.
But to people in Drogheda, it holds a special place in their hearts…
1. The car park is where it’s REALLY AT
You get libraries, circuses, amusements… why would you even want to go inside?
2. The Drogheda Antiques Centre was an absolute treasure trove
It’s new enough, but you could find some serious gems in there before it moved.
3. Mildred’s was the only place to grab some grub
Their hot dogs were the closest you could get to New York in Drogheda. This sign will forever be etched into your memories.
4. Harpo’s was the only place to go to get cool clothes
X-Worx and Eclipse jeans.
5. You remember when the Supervalu used to be called the VG
The only place for mammy to do the big shop.
6. A visit to The Abbey cinema was the highlight of your childhood
You queued for a movie at one stage, QUEUED.
7. You played on the Space Invaders upstairs during school breaks
Once you found the door in off West Street.
8. You’ll never forget the grim tiling
It looked like your nan’s kitchen lino.
9. All the shops felt like little boxes
10. You could spend hours in the bookshop on the bottom floor
You know how some places would move you on for reading and loitering? This place encouraged it.
11. Tassles Pub was a no go
It was rough around the edges… basically, you’ve never been in it.
