EARLIER THIS WEEK, the movie world was shocked when – completely out of the blue – Daniel Day-Lewis announced that he is calling it quits on his acting career.
And just the three Oscars in the bag, too.
Straight away, the joke started doing the rounds that it was all just Day-Lewis’s legendary commitment to method acting at play here
He’ll be back, surely.
Well, those theories were advanced further last night when Amy Poehler appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers.
And she had many hilarious takes on the Day-Lewis situation
So many thoughts:
“Here’s my theory about Daniel Day-Lewis. I think he’s going to come back as another actor and fool us all!”
“There’s going to be some young guy on the scene who’s in a bunch of indies and he’s amazing and then we’ll realise ‘that was Daniel Day-Lewis’”
“He’s so good he doesn’t even have to rip off a mask. He just rips his own face and changes it. And you’re like, what?!”
She moved on to another potential explanation of why it happened – Irish Catholic guilt:
“I’m obsessed with Daniel Day-Lewis retiring from acting. I love it because it’s such a great Irish Catholic like ‘I’m going to reject you before you reject me, I break up with you!’”
She had a great anecdote abut Daniel from the first time she hosted the Golden Globes with Tina Fey:
“We made a joke about ET, and he didn’t know we were making a joke, where we said he was such a good actor that he played ET and then he just slowly raised his finger up”
She then had an inspirational message for him:
Daniel, if you’re watching in bed right now – you’re just getting your salt on, probably eating some chips – don’t quit! We need you!
But Seth was confused by the chips reference so Amy had to explain:
When you quit things, don’t you eat chips?
But that confusion transitioned nicely into her final Day-Lewis theory:
“I think he’s going like this *dusts off hands* dusting chips off his hands”
“Do you think there’s a chance he was with his agent and he said ‘I’m done,’ but he was just done with chips? And he just put out a press release and [Daniel] is like ‘No, no, no, no! Just done with chips!”
Plausible.
She had the audience and Meyers in stitches
Felt like she could talk Day-Lewis all night
And everyone watching at home could listen
We’re here for Poehler’s conspiracy theories
More, please.
