THE IRISH FILM and Television Awards were the prime offering on RTÉ One last night but TV viewers across the land didn’t seem to think much of the ceremony.
Hosted by Simon Delaney and Laura Whitmore, the two-hour programme had Twitter glued to the screen, but for all the wrong reasons.
Things got off to a rocky start when, despite efforts to emulate Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s magic, Delaney and Whitmore’s opening double act fell a bit flat.
That’s what happens when you suggest Brian O’Driscoll, Colin Farrell, Jamie Dornan and Michael Fassbender should form a boyband.
The hit and miss pattern continued throughout the evening, with a joke at Michael Fassbender’s expense from the young Moone Boy lads getting more of a laugh than many of the presenters’ efforts.
As if losing the audience on Twitter wasn’t enough, even the audience seemed to be having a laugh at their expense.
Brendan Gleeson delivered this humdinger to Simon Delaney when the pair sat down for a chat mid-ceremony.
Meanwhile, back on Twitter, things weren’t looking much better.
There was absolute UPROAR when this happened.
And even Gerry Adams had something to say about the whole thing.
The deafening roar of the audience didn’t go unnoticed by the viewers either.
The solution?
Until next year…
