WE THINK WE get it bad with rain in Ireland, but at least the clouds aren’t chucking marine life at us.
Around 110 pounds of small fish rained down on a Sri Lankan village during a storm earlier this week.
The BBC reports that the fish rain shower took place on Monday, with villagers finding fish on their roofs, roads and the village green.
Don’t worry, it’s not a Biblical curse – scientists say “fish rain” occurs when a tornado passes over shallow water, sucking up anything in the water – including fish, eels and frogs.
The fish could have been carried for long distances by the tornado before being unleashed on the unsuspecting villagers.
This is the third time it has happened in the country, but not in the same area.
In 2012 a case of “prawn rain” was recorded in the south of the country.
The villagers are “delighted” as fish is very valuable in Sri Lanka – in this video, you can see them collecting up the still-live fish to eat later.
We wouldn’t be half as pleased, but each to their own. Well, maybe if the fish was already battered…
