REMEMBER THE LEPRECHAUN horror movie franchise from the 90s? The one that starred a then-unknown Jennifer Aniston? Well it’s back.
Leprechaun: Origins is a brand new take on the classic – and this time it’s actually set in Ireland. Gulp. According to SlashFilm.com, the official synopsis is as follows:
Backpacking through the lush Irish countryside, two unsuspecting young couples discover a town’s chilling secret. Ben, Sophie, David and Jeni quickly discover the idyllic land is not what it appears to be when the town’s residents offer the hikers an old cabin at the edge of the woods. Soon, the friends will find that one of Ireland’s most famous legends is a terrifying reality.
DUN DUN DUNNNNN. A new trailer and image from the film were released at Comic Con this week, and they’re…interesting.
Here are five of the most ridiculous bits.
1. The unnaturally sunny ‘Ireland’
WHAT IS THIS PLACE.
2. Obligatory shot of a character drinking Guinness
3. The pronunciation of ‘Tuatha Dé Danann’
“Tooatha day da-nan.”
Also, the Tuatha Dé Danann were a whole race of people, not just leprechauns. In fact, the Irish word for ‘leprechaun’ is simply ‘leipreachán’.
4. Irish characters in paddy caps and braces
5. The leprechaun isn’t even remotely like the leprechauns we’re used to
In the original series, the leprechaun in question actually resembled the traditional image of a leprechaun, albeit a twisted one. This leprechaun is pretty much a standard movie monster, complete with dripping fangs.
Bonus Celtic Cross!
Here’s the full trailer:
The film will be released straight to video on demand in the US next month. Surprise, surprise.
