ROBIN WILLIAMS, BELOVED star of films like Mrs Doubtfire, Aladdin and Dead Poets Society, has died at the age of 63.
Yesterday, the world lost a brilliant comedian, actor, and childhood hero to many.
A great deal of the characters he portrayed on screen are famed for their way with words, and Williams wasn’t too shabby himself. Here are some of his most memorable quotes.
On confrontation:
Never pick a fight with an ugly person, they’ve got nothing to lose.
On crowd-pleasing comedy:
When in doubt, just go for the d**k joke.
On the male brain:
See, the problem is that God gives men a brain and a penis, and only enough blood to run one at a time.
On God:
Do you think God gets stoned? I think so… look at the platypus.
On success:
From his wonderful 1998 Oscars speech, which you can watch in full here.
Most of all I want to thank my father, up there, the man who when I said I wanted to be an actor, he said, “Wonderful. Just have a back-up profession like welding.”
On his battle with alcoholism:
After I quit drinking, I realised I am the same asshole I always was; I just have fewer dents in my car.
On finding your way:
What’s right is what’s left if you do everything else wrong.
On performance:
Stand-up is the place where you can do things that you could never do in public. Once you step on stage you’re licensed to do that. It’s an understood relationship. You walk on stage – it’s your job.
On staying true to yourself:
You’re only given a little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.
And on the concept of death:
Death is nature’s way of saying, “Your table is ready.”
