UNLESS YOU’VE BEEN living under a rock for the past few weeks, you may have noticed that everyone and their granny is chucking buckets of ice water over themselves for charity.
Spurred on by celebrities like Benedict Cumberbatch, Niall Horan and Victoria Beckham, thousands of Irish people have taken the plunge and done the Ice Bucket Challenge.
The initiative began earlier this month in the US to raise funds for ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, the US term for Motor Neurone Disease) and has since made its way to Ireland, raising funds for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
And it has paid off – today, the IMNDA reported on their Facebook page that the donations have now reached €680,000.
That’s a massive jump from yesterday’s estimation, which stood at €350,000. IMNDA chief executive Aisling Farrell said there had been a spike in donations after Dáithí Ó Sé did his challenge live on air during the Rose of Tralee on 19 August.
In the US, where the craze began, the challenge has raised $79.7 million for Motor Neurone Disease.
