True or false? 9 Uber Facts investigated and debunked
UBER FACTS IS one of the most popular accounts on Twitter with over 9.31 million followers. Anyone who has read the account has likely questioned the veracity of the facts at one time or another.
After all, some of them are just plain outrageous.
We investigated some and our main takeaway? Don’t believe everything you read.
1. Sex is a natural antihistamine that combats asthma and high fever
True or false: Likely false. In fact, sex can exacerbate asthma symptoms. As outlined here, this “fact” is based on a theory put forth by one doctor in Iran, so don’t go giving up your inhaler just yet.
2. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are cousins
True or false?: Half-true. They’re apparently tenth cousins, once removed.
3. Morgan Freeman has received 105 Academy Awards/nominations.
True or false?: Not even close to being true. (Obviously.) In fact, he has been nominated five times, winning once.
4. Loneliness can be as contagious as the flu.
True or false?: According to one study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, loneliness can indeed be contagious.
The study monitored 5,100 people and their patterns of loneliness, and found that such feelings could spread through a social network.
So that much is true. Saying it’s as contagious as the flu, though? That seems like a bit of a leap.
5. Consumption of caffeine increases focus for men, but not women.
True or false: There doesn’t seem to be any evidence to back up this claim.
In fact, one study conducted by researchers at University of Bristol found that consumption of caffeine helped women perform better in stressful situations, while caffeine actually hindered men’s performance.
So there.
6. It is illegal to mispronounce “Arkansas” in the state of Arkansas.
True or false?: False. It’s not illegal, but a section of the Arkansas state code that mispronouncing it as “Ark-an-sass” is to be “discouraged”.
Fair enough.
7. Winnie-The-Pooh characters all represent some type of mental disorder. (Eeyore- Depression, Pooh – Addiction, Tiger – ADHD, Owl – OCD)
True or false?: False. This is just one of those popular internet interpretations that has taken on a life of its own, but there’s nothing to suggest that it was AA Milne’s intention.
8. Drinking three or more cups of coffee a day can shrink a woman’s breast
True or false: This claim is based on one study that was widely dismissed and ripped to shreds here, so you can continue drinking coffee without fear of boob-shrinking.
9. Jackie Stallone specialises in the reading of butts.
True or false?: This is absolutely true.
