IT’S NOT A lot of speeches that could make Meryl Streep rise from her chair and fist pump the air, but Patricia Arquette managed to do just that in her acceptance speech last night.

Arquette won Best Supporting Actress for her performance as a single mother in Boyhoo and after delivering the requisite thank yous, she proceeded to deliver an impassioned plea for wage equality.

To every woman who gave birth. To every tax payer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It’s time to have wage equality once and for all, and equal rights for women in the United States of America.

At which point Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lopez stood up and were like, “PREACH!”

It was an important moment.

The speech has been incredibly well-received with many praising Arquette for using her platform to draw attention to the issue of equal pay and citing it as one of the highlights of the night.

For her part, Arquette didn’t witness Streep’s reaction, but did refer to her as the “patron saint of actresses”.

Beautiful.
