AS WE ALL know, social media can be a hotbed for negativity.
This week, Dove launched a campaign imploring women to “speak beautiful” on Twitter. In this ad, the brand notes that women sent over 5 million negative tweets about body image and beauty in 2014.
To help the counter the negativity, the brand started the hashtag #SpeakBeautiful and highlighted some stats about tweets sent during the Oscars.
A few heavy hitters like Arianna Huffington and LeAnn Rimes have lent their support on Twitter.
Elsewhere, though, the whole thing has kind of backfired with many taking issue with the premise of the campaign.
Some pointed out that companies like Dove help perpetuate insecurities and negative body image.
While others highlighted the fact that social media can be a hostile place for women…
Others saw it as little more than a publicity ploy.
Some mentioned the fact that its parent company Unilever has been known to sell skin-lightening products
And others just felt uncomfortable with the whole thing
For its part, Dove appears to be ignoring the backlash and has set up a bot to reply to any tweet expressing negative views about body image.
