FIRST DATES MIGHT just be the most life-affirming programme on television and last night’s episode was no different.
Among the contestants to warm people’s hearts? Charlie from Northern Ireland.
The 27-year-old, now based in Manchester, is a female-to-male transsexual who started hormone treatment last December.
Somebody said ‘she’ and my heart used just to sink because that was so unnatural to me. I didn’t have any connection to that whatsoever.
Growing up in Ireland and knowing that I would have had to come out as being gay at the time was itself very difficult, never mind telling my parents that I was trans.
Charlie’s date was 22-year-old Charlotte, a bisexual whose last relationship was with a woman.
During their date, Charlie informed Charlotte that he was “born a girl”
His date’s reaction?
I don’t think I’ve ever been speechless before. I don’t care. I’m more shocked because I never would have thought it from you.
A relieved Charlie described her reaction as “top” and the date continued as normal.
That smile! <3
Over on Twitter, people praised both Charlie for being open and Charlotte for being so tolerant and accepting.
While others praised Channel 4 for featuring a transgender person on the show.
As for how Charlie and Charlotte got on?
Charlie described the experience as “empowering” and thanked her for her warm reception. They went on a second date, but decided to remain friends afterwards.
Something tells us it won’t be long before both find love.
