IT’S HARD TO believe but The Babysitter’s Club turns 30 years old this year.
According to author Ann M. Martin, August 1st marked the 30th anniversary of the publication of Kristy’s Great Idea, the first book in The Babysitter’s Club series. Since then, dozens more book have been published and over 176 million copies have been sold.
1. As soon as you started reading the books, you desperately wanted to set up your own babysitting company
And you had great admiration for their entrepreneurial spirit.
2. You fantasised about what position you’d take up in The Babysitter’s Club
“I’d definitely be treasurer.”
3. In fact, The Babysitter’s Club taught you all about the structure of companies/organisations
Okay, so you have to have a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and junior officer. Got it.
4. It made Connecticut sound so cool and exotic
So much so that you found yourself wishing that you could live in Stoneybrook. (And you were devastated when you discovered it wasn’t real.)
5. There was always one babysitter you strongly identified with
Were you more of a Claudia Kishi or Stacey McGill?
6. Likewise there was always one you just couldn’t get behind
“Ugh, a Dawn-heavy book? Next.”
7. Your bookshelf looked a little something like this
Multiplied by 20.
8. The books taught you about ~real things~ like diabetes and death
Who among us can forget when Stacey went into diabetic shock? Or when Claudia had to bid farewell to her beloved Mimi?
The Babysitters Club taught us some invaluable life lessons.
9. The movie left a lot to be desired…
But that doesn’t mean you didn’t watch it countless times during your midterm breaks.
10. But really the books were where it was at
Yes, they may have been insanely young to have children entrusted in their care, but you still loved reading their adventures.
Long live The Babysitter’s Club.
