OKAY, IT MIGHT still technically be too early for Christmas, but we’re willing to make an exception for this lovely ad from Smyth’s Toys.
The toy store is winning praise for its latest ad, which features a little boy singing a reworked version of Beyoncé’s If I Were A Boy (called If I Were A Toy, obviously) and imagining all the things he’d do if he were a toy.
The ad is being praised as it features the little boy dreaming of playing with Lego and being a queen.
The ad is being praised for ‘de-gendering’ toys and challenging stereotypes about what boys and girls can play with.
It’s being seen as a win for the movement against gender-stereotyped toy marketing, which people say puts unnecessary limits on children’s play and perpetuates old gender stereotypes.
It also helps that it’s really adorable.
As the saying goes: “Let toys be toys.”
