There's a great pop up café in Temple Bar run by people in Direct Provision (but it's closing on Friday)

Our Table has been trying to raise awareness of living conditions in direct provision centres.

A FEW WEEKS ago, a pop-up café called Our Table opened in Project Arts Centre.

The café, which is a not-for-profit enterprise, aims to highlight the plight of asylum seekers living within direct provision.

Direct provision is a system in which asylum seekers are given basic accommodation and a small allowance of €19.10 per adult and €15.60 per child per week. Those in direct are not eligible to work and cannot even cook for themselves.

The café’s stint in Project Arts Centre comes to an end this Friday. Here’s why you should pop in there before it closes.

For one thing, the food is very, very nice

The café serves 3fe coffee and everything from warming soups to delicious pastries, all of which boast different and unique flavours from all over the world.

Beats the usual pre-packed chicken and stuffing sandwich, eh?

But it’s not really just about the food…

It’s about the knowledge that you’re supporting a worthwhile endeavor, one that will help facilitate much-needed conversations about direct provision and hopefully foster opportunities for immigrants in Ireland in the future.

After all, it currently employs several ex-DP residents…

Imagine what it could achieve if it finds a permanent premises?

If you fancy popping in, Our Table is open in Project Arts Centre from 10am – 4pm until this Friday.
