BEN AFFLECK’s latest directorial effort is Prohibition-era gangster flick Live By Night, an adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel of the same name.
The film features a bevy of A-list actors like Zoe Saldana, Elle Fanning and our own Brendan Gleeson, but it’s Sienna Miller’s character that’s getting attention (perhaps not for the right reasons).
Miller plays Emma Gould, a gangster’s moll from Cork who is dating a mob boss while carrying on an affair with Affleck’s character – her attempt at an Irish accent is… well, listen to it.
SOMEWHERE WARUM.
Irish people who have already seen the film (it’s due to be released this day week) have come away impressed by Miller’s performance, but slightly dubious about the accent:
Appearing on the Today show in the US to promote the film, she was fairly grilled on the brogue by host Matt Lauer:
Do you fancy yourself to be good at accents?
I do, yeah. Well, it’s my job!
He then asked her to repeat a sentence in Emma’s accent, and well…
That was Irish? Are you serious?
The shade.
Sienna, you’re now in the exclusive club of Hollywood actors who have struggled with the Irish accent – Gerard Butler, Kevin Spacey, Julia Roberts, and Sean Connery are all there, so you’re in great company. Welcome!
