BONO HAS MANY famous friends, but we wouldn’t have said George W Bush was one of them – that is, until the former US President posted this photo to his Instagram.
In the caption, he wrote:
Bono is the real deal. He has a huge heart and a selfless soul, not to mention a decent voice.
Is that a bit of friendly slagging? Wow.
According to ABC News, Bono stopped in at the Bush ranch in Crawford, Texas yesterday ahead of U2′s gig in the nearby city of Richardson.
The pair met to talk about their work fighting AIDS around the world, both with Bono’s charity ONE and PEPFAR, a global AIDS programme Bush set up in office. Bono said:
More than 11 million people are alive today thanks to this man’s creation of PEPFAR… That progress is all at risk now with President Trump’s budget cuts, which will mean needless infections and lives lost.
It’s quite a turnaround for Bono – he admitted trying to “dodge a hug” from Bush at an event in 2006, and The Edge has spoken before of how the band were iffy about posing for photos with him during his presidency.
It seems they managed to put that behind them, and posed together at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service in 2013:
Now they’re the best of buddies. Opposites attract, truly.
