HUGE HITS LIKE Serial and S-Town showed that people can’t get enough of true crime podcasts (or ones that seem like true crime podcasts, as S-Town did).
If you’ve devoured those, here are some to try next.
1. Criminal
This podcast takes a more nuanced, less sensationalist look at crime, hearing from people who’ve done wrong, been wronged, or “caught somewhere in the middle”, as they say themselves. The storytelling is top notch.
2. They Walk Among Us
TWAU is a UK-based podcast hosted by a mysterious husband-and-wife team called Benjamin and Rosie (no last names). It tells the stories of all sorts of cases, from the “sinister to the surreal”.
3. Sword And Scale
Hosted by Mike Boudet, this show covers the “dark underworld of crime” and the criminal justice system. There are interviews with victims and perpetrators, and it aims to give a deeper insight into the cases than most other media.
4. My Favourite Murder
This is a comedic take on the genre, which skewers our obsession with true crime while totally feeding into it. And the tag line is “Stay sexy, don’t get murdered!” If that doesn’t draw you in, we don’t know what will.
5. Last Podcast On The Left
Last Podcast doesn’t fit strictly into the true crime brief, but takes in all sorts of monsters, demons, cults and conspiracies, from the real to the fictional. Perfect if you’re a fan of scaring yourself silly reading creepypastas late at night.
6. The Generation Why
Two pals, Aaron and Justin, go deep and share their thoughts on mysteries, urban legends, and true crime – from recent cases like the one of Dee Dee and Gypsy Blancharde to the infamous Hungarian countess Elizabeth Bathory.
7. Up And Vanished
Like Serial and S-Town, this series focuses on one case throughout the whole season – that of Tara Grinstead, a high school teacher who disappeared from her hometown in Georgia in 2005. Up and Vanished examines the case from top to bottom.
