THIS IS A STORY about one Gaelic football that went were no other Gaelic footballs have ever gone before: On a journey across the sea.
This morning Dungloe GAA club in Co Donegal received a Facebook message from a man called Arthur Hayes, who shared a very interesting discovery with them:
Yesterday I found washed up on a beach in North Uist, Scotland, a fully inflated, perfect condition ‘Dungloe Ladies GAA’ football. Either one of your ladies has a particularly powerful shot (throw? punt? I’m not really up on the rules) or the ball has survived a seaborne journey of hundreds of miles.
“Respect to the quality of your Gaelic footballs,” he said. Sure enough, here he is with the hardy ball:
Just in case you were wondering where North Uist is, it’s in the Hebrides – way up above Co Donegal.
How did it get in the sea in the first place? What things did it see on its journey? Has it developed a taste for the nautical life? So many questions.
