AN TOSTAL FESTIVAL in Drumshanbo, Leitrim has reached its 65th year since beginning in 1953 and this year they’re celebrating in an unusual but hilarious way. The festival, which begins on the 2nd of July is holding a ‘Stylish Silage’ competition.
Even the name is pretty funny. There is no way that you would ever hear the words ‘Stylish Silage’ outside of this country.
For the Stylish Silage competition, entrants must get creative in decorating their bales. The entrants so far are really impressive.
1. There’s a John Deere
2. A decent sized pint of Guinness
3. Of course there’s a minion made of baled silage too
4. A huge jar of jam
5. The biggest Henry hoover you will ever lay your eyes on
6. Thomas the Tank Engine has also made an appearance
7. As well as a Nemo and Dory themed entry
DailyEdge.ie spoke to Chairperson of An Tostal Hugh James Gallagher, who informed us that there are around thirty entrants in total. The competition has been a huge success in promoting An Tostal and it’s not hard to see why.
The prizes for the potential winners of Stylish Silage are €300 for first place, €200 for second place and €100 for third place. Judging will be done on Saturday the 1st of July ahead of the week long festival, so if you’re dying to see what the winning bale of silage is (that’s a sentence nobody could have ever anticipated typing), keep an eye on their Facebook page.
Apart from their gas silage competition, they have a heap of events on from the 2nd to the 8th of July. This includes a performance by a Joe Dolan cover band, an appearance from Joanne O’Riordan of No Limbs No Limits, some cooking tips from Chef Adrian, a motor bike show and a kid’s fun day.
The festival is the oldest of its kind in Leitrim and one of the oldest festivals in the north-west of the country. Hopefully Stylish Silage becomes a lasting part of the festival.
