Vogue want to bring back the Irish staple trend: jeans and a nice top

Jeans and a nice top isn’t an outfit. It’s a state of mind.

JEANS AND A nice top. That one combination of clothing that every young woman, at some stage, has assured their friends would be the tone of the evening’s dress code.

It’s rare that anyone actually found the perfect ‘nice top’, but when it happens, it’s a moment to be celebrated.

Vogue‘s Emily Farra has written a love letter to the staple outfit, sharing her appreciation for the ‘outfit we all remember wearing on repeat, all year round, for every occasion’.

It never struck me as a trend so much as an easy two-step formula ingrained in every girl’s style.

Noting that fancy tops haven’t been that cool for a few years, Farra explained that they have taken a backseat while plain t-shirts and men’s button-downs have been more popular for the last few years.

Have these t-shirts and button-downs adapted into being the new ‘nice top’? Farra definitely does not think so, but you could probably argue very fairly that they have. T-shirts can be nice tops. Button-downs can be nice tops.

‘Jeans and a nice top’ is a state of mind, not an outfit.

Babe once wrote:

On average women speak 13,000 more words than men every day, but are any of those words as powerful as the phrase “jeans and a nice top?” Probably not.

It’s a vague phrase, yet is it widely and collectively understood immediately. There is not one definition of jeans and a nice top that succinctly explains exactly what the phrase means.

It’s a feeling. Everyone’s definition of  jeans and a nice top is different but your friends will always know exactly what you’re talking about.

It could be your first port of call while getting ready. It could be being fed up with trying on different outfits and settling on the combination. It’s knowing your friends are wearing their jeans and nice tops in solidarity with you.

Everyone’s comfortable and everyone’s going to have a nice time.

Except for the friend that didn’t get the memo.

How have clothing retailers yet to pick up on this?

Jeans and a nice top could be sold like co-ords.  Jeans and a nice top never died, Vogue. The outfits presence will always be constant as long as there are girls going out together.
