WE STILL HAVE more than a month to go until Christmas, but you wouldn’t know that if you walked down any main street in Ireland. You can’t walk 20 feet in Dublin without encountering some fairy lights.

At the moment, things are particularly festive in Galway, with students in Christmas jumpers lining up for a few jars on Wood Quay.

And it’s all for a good cause.

NUI Galway’s Student Union are throwing their annual Charity Christmas Day celebrations, with proceeds going to Domestic Violence Response Ltd and Amach LGBT Galway.

As part of the biggest charity event of their first semester, NUIG’s Student Union arranged a Christmas dinner “in a box”, a visit from Santa and loads of “festive surprises”.

For those of us outside Galway, we will continue to respect the date that is formally recognized across Ireland as the beginning of Christmas – the day that the Late Late Toy Show airs. That’ll be the 1st of December. Only two weeks to go.
