AFTER TWENTY-NINE years of being best friends, two Dublin men in their 80s have decided to get married.
Not because they’re in love or anything, but because it just makes a lot of sense. 84-year-old Michael O’Sullivan told RTÉ’s Liveline that his best friend Matt plans to leave his Stoneybatter home to him when he passes away.
After almost three decades of friendship, Michael has been acting as Matt’s carer.
However, Michael told Liveline that the gift of Matt’s home ‘posed a potential problem’ for him.
The problem is that, due to Capital Acquisitions Tax, Michael would be forced to pay half of what Matt left to him to the government. However, this obviously doesn’t apply to couples who are married or in civil partnerships.
Matt told Liveline:
He’s my best friend. We’re getting married so whatever I have in my home, he can have.
They were set to exchange best friend vows in Co. Tipperary on the 22nd of December, but it has been postponed until January due to the weather.
At least they’re going to make a nice little day out of it.
