Twitter users expressed concern about the photograph, saying that they had been outdoors that day and found it was bitter outside. Helen Lewis, editor of New Statesman, called it a ‘quietly depressing (and revealing) image’ that showed how differently men and women in Hollywood are treated.
Lewis wrote that “true equality means either Jennifer Lawrence getting a coat, or Jeremy Irons having to pose for a photocall in assless chaps.”

The thread of tweets dissecting Jennifer’s dress situation got a considerable amount of attention, and made headlines. Particularly because people looked at Jennifer Lawrence’s previous comments about feeling unable to say “no”, for fear of being labelled difficult to work with.
In November, Lawrence told a roundtable of celebrities that she was threatened every time she attempted to stand up for herself at work and said that she often felt afraid that she wouldn’t be hired when she spoke out.
However, last night Jennifer Lawrence released a statement on Facebook confirming that wearing that dress outdoors was 100% her decision.

Wow. I don’t really know where to get started on this “Jennifer Lawrence wearing a revealing dress in the cold” controversy. This is not only utterly ridiculous, I am extremely offended. That Versace dress was fabulous, you think I’m going to cover that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf?
Lawrence then added that she had only been outdoors for a short time.
I was outside for 5 minutes. I would have stood in the snow for that dress because I love fashion and that was my choice.
She continued by branding criticism of the dress as ‘sexist’.
This is sexist, this is ridiculous, this is not feminism. Overreacting about everything someone says or does, creating controversy over silly innocuous things such as what I choose to wear or not wear is not moving us forward. Get a grip people. Everything you see me wear is my choice. And if I want to be cold THAT’S MY CHOICE TOO!
