Last night's extremely heartwarming episode of The Young Offenders had viewers in tears

LAST NIGHT’S EPISODE of The Young Offenders had all of the usual laughs.
Conor and Jock continued to hound Linda and Siobhan and decided to take a doss day with the two girls. As the episode went on, things got unexpectedly sad.
Two warnings here: the first is obviously that there’s spoilers ahead and the second is that you might have something in your eye by the time you finish this episode.

If you’ve seen The Young Offenders movie, you’ll know that Jock’s family life is quite shit. His mother, who he loved very much, passed away and he was left with his alcoholic father who was negligent and abusive.
Conor and Jock’s doss day with the girls happened to be on the second anniversary of Jock’s mother’s death and he struggled to keep it together in front of his friends.
After a comical scene in which Jock does his nemo routine under Daly’s footbridge, things took an emotional turn when Jock got this text from his dad:

The girls weren’t aware of this and continued to be a little bit mean to Jock and Conor, because they were finding their doss day schedule fairly underwhelming. When Jock had enough with trying to please Linda and Siobhan, he stormed off.
Conor explained to the Siobhan that it was Jock’s mam’s anniversary.
From this point onward, she lightened up and went a bit easier on him.

Meanwhile, Linda and Conor bonded over their passion for chicken. The girls agreed to head to the graveyard with Conor and Jock and immediately came to be more understanding of Jock’s situation when they witnessed the state his dad was in at the graveyard.

Things got even sadder when Jock and Conor told the girls about how Jock’s mam died.

Jock began to sing U2′s With or Without You, his mam’s favourite song. Linda and Siobhan thought he was being weird, until Conor joined in (like the loyal friend that he is) and eventually the girls joined in and all four of them stood by the graveside singing together.
None of us signed up for these kinds of emotions.

Thankfully, it jumped straight back into the comedy (although there were some seriously heartwarming moments afterwards) and viewers got a chance to compose themselves.
People on Twitter were pretty impressed with how well Jock’s vulnerable side was portrayed.

But plenty of people went to bed with a ‘warm smile’ as PJ Gallagher promised.
The episode ended with Jock and Conor getting some tattoos.
Conor’s mam had been seriously concerned that he had bonked off school to get a huge back tattoo. When he revealed what his tattoo really was…

The episode ended with a dedication to all of the mams.
