IMAGINE A LIFE where you didn’t have to free up an hour every week to stroll around the harshly lit aisles of Dunnes and Aldi just to buy food.
Imagine a life where you didn’t have kids screaming to informing you that they need to go to the bathroom when the trolley’s half full. A life where you don’t have to scramble around trying to pick up a few more bits to bring the shopping up to €50 so you can use your voucher.
Must be nice.
For four years, Bill Gates held the title of the richest man in the world. He was only overtaken by the CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, this year.
Now that he’s been taken down a peg or two, billionaire Bill Gates has been hanging around with Ellen DeGeneres, whose fortune amounts to a mere $400 million. That should ground him a little bit, right?
Ellen Ellen
This week on Ellen, the pair of them decided to play a little game where Bill guesses the price of some products that can be found in the homes of everyday normal guys.
Ellen promised the audience that if Bill could guess 3 out of 5 prices correctly, everyone would go home with a prize. Ellen then said that if Bill Gates managed to guess all 5 prices correctly, she and Bill Gates would pay off every audience members student loans.
Naturally this was met with laughter. Because there’s no way in hell that Bill Gates could ever guess how much regular people spend on food. Haha! Guess our kids will all just have to remained crippled by hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of debt.
…Anyway
First up, Bill had to guess the price of a box of some seasoned pilau rice.
Ellen Ellen
Bill Gates’ Estimate? $5.
Actual price: $1.
Then Gates was asked to guess the price of America’s favourite snack: Tide Pods.
Ellen Ellen
Bill Gates’ Estimate? Initially he said $4, but when the audience groaned he increased it to $10.
Actual price: $19.97.
Thirdly, he was asked to guess the price of a spool of dental floss.
Ellen Ellen
Bill Gates’ Estimate? $4
Actual price: $3.78
Perhaps he has some fond memories of cleaning his teeth back when he was poor. Next up, was a packet of frozen pizza rolls.
Ellen Ellen
Bill Gates’ Estimate? $22. The audience began to scream, because he was destroying their opportunity to receive a prize. They depended on him getting next two guesses correct to receive that mystery prize that Ellen promised. With hand gestures, they hinted the actual price, so he lowered his guess to $15, before Ellen told him to go lower. Gates then changed his final answer to $8.
Actual price: $8.98. Well, he got there after a lot of assistance.
Finally, Gates was asked to guess the price of TGI Friday’s artichoke and spinach dip.
Ellen Ellen
Bill Gates’ Estimate? Because it was branded with the coveted TGI Friday’s logo, Gates incredulously asked the audience if they really believed that it cost less than $10. He lowered his final answer to $4.
Actual price: $3.66.
Wow, the audience’s lucky day. He would have failed spectacularly without the huge amount of help they gave him.
