THERE ARE FEW athletes who don’t – at some point – imagine themselves representing their country in their chosen field.

Indeed, for many, the idea of pulling on the Irish colours is the ultimate goal, and one which 23-year-old Leah Lyons realised when she was called up to the Irish Rugby Squad in 2016.

And yet despite her prowess on the pitch, it seems some spectators feel compelled to comment on the young woman’s appearance while representing the country.

Indeed, the Cork woman was forced to defend herself against a cruel jibe which was levelled at her while she took on Wales at Donnybrook Stadium on Sunday.

Taking to Twitter in the aftermath of a victory against her opponents, Leah, who plays Prop, advised rugby fans to focus on the game as opposed to the physique of the players.

In a heartfelt post, which was liked more than 1,000 times, Leah revealed that a spectator had made a particularly disparaging remark against her.

Poor choice of wording from a man in the crowd (Irish) yesterday. ‘Heifer’ in relating to myself.”

Reminding the man in question that his remark could have far-reaching effects, Leah urged him to consider its implications.

You’re seated 3 rows away from my family who heard you and surround by young children, girls and boys who are all shapes and sizes.

“No one is perfect, I realise I’m am example of that, but have a bit of respect!” Leah added.

Leah’s fans and followers were quick to support the sentiments on Twitter, and Leah’s opponent on the day, Welsh player, Caryl Thomas, wasted no time championing the Cork woman.

Totally agree Leah, Rugby is a game for all! There’s such a variety of strengths needed (positionally, mentally and physically) to stay at the highest level on and off the pitch.
