8 reasons why Sugababes were one of the best pop groups of our lifetime

We are lucky to be living in the same timeline as the Sugababes.

1. They were literal CHILDREN when they started off their music careers.

It’s very easy to forget that Sugababes formed when Siobhán and Mutya were thirteen years old. First year of secondary school. They released Overload in 2000, when they were fifteen. These kids were at number 6 in the UK Singles Chart and won the BRIT Award for Best Single when they were only just old enough to be doing their Junior Cert.

2. Just after this, Siobhán made her departure, and the band did not falter.

Little did we know, this would be the first of many departures, which made the Sugababes the girl-group equivalent of the Ship of Theseus, and the topic of many jokes for years to come.

3. Then Heidi joined, and the girls had their next hit with ‘Freak Like Me’.

The Sugababes were just about old enough to do the Leaving Cert when this one came out, with a music video that inexplicably features them killing loads of random men in a nightclub.

This hit number 1 in the charts, and it’s well deserved. Still a banger after all these years.

4. And they immediately followed that with another number 1 song: Round Round.

This is another one of six number 1 UK singles. For reference, Drake, Ed Sheeran, David Bowie, Katy Perry and Beyoncé have only had five UK number 1 singles each.

 5. They also did some really good sad songs.

Remember ‘Shape’?

And ‘Too Lost In You’?

And ‘About You Now’?

You see where I’m going with this.

6. Yet, they still managed to keep the belters coming.

7. Maybe the constant lineup changes were how they managed to keep things fresh.

8. But nobody will ever beat the original lineup.

For legal reasons, they are now called Mutya Keisha Siobhán and they are still pretty good together, even after twenty odd years.
