Lana Del Rey's criticism of Kanye West means nothing after the drama surrounding her Israel gig
LAST NIGHT, RAPPER Kanye West uploaded yet another Instagram post in support of Donald Trump.
The 41-year-old shared a photograph of himself in a Make America Great Again cap while flying on a private jet, and wrote:
Nobody knows what’s best for the ordinary people of America like a man relaxing on a $33,000 flight.
While Lana Del Rey was scrolling down her Instagram timeline yesterday evening, she spotted the post and decided to comment. You can see screenshots here. Here’s what she wrote:
Sure, Kanye’s a massive eejit and there’s plenty of reason for Lana to be angry, but maybe she should take some brief consideration before calling someone else a narcissist. A few weeks ago, the 33-year-old was suggesting that her music could bring an end to decades of conflict dating back to Israel’s occupation of Palestine in 1967.
Lana appeared as a headliner on the lineup for the Meteor festival in Tel Aviv, which resulted in backlash from many fans hoping Lana would cancel the performance as acts like Gorillaz, Lauryn Hill and singer Lorde have previously done. Jewish and Palestinian fans had gotten in touch with Lorde to explain the importance of boycotting Israel.
Lorde took this feedback on board and cancelled her concert, but Lana Del Rey responded a little bit differently to criticism. She wrote on Twitter:
Incredible. Why did nobody think of that before? Lana said that her Israeli show was booked and planned “to be done with a loving energy and a thematic emphasis on peace.” Historically, loving energy hasn’t been quite as effective as boycotting, tbh.
Eventually, Lana announced that she would play a Palestinian gig to balance things out. She was unable to book a concert in Palestine, so she eventually decided to cancel her appearance at the Meteor festival – quietly though, without publicly voicing any opposition to the Israeli government policies that her fans were critical of.
On top of that, Azealia Banks took to Twitter to share some more reasons why Lana’s criticism of Kanye was inconsistent with some of her previous actions.
Referring to the charges of assault brought against A$AP Rocky in 2013 after he allegedly hit a female fan, Banks said that Lana Del Rey used Kanye in a ‘vapid attempt to seem politically aware’.
Azealia then added:
Azealia also said that after Russell Crowe spat on her in front of witnesses, she turned to Lana Del Rey for support.
