A look back at some of the questionable things Pete Davidson said over the course of his relationship with Ariana

IF YOU HAVE taken even a solitary glance at the internet today, there’s a good chance that you caught wind of Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson’s breakup.
After a few weeks of dating in May, the couple were engaged in June and plastered in tattoos dedicated to each other by the end of summer. But now, their relationship seems to have ended as suddenly as it began.
There were probably numerous issues in their relationship that led to their breakup (and Pete’s subsequent decision to cover up an Ariana Grande tattoo on his neck), because the pair of them have had a pretty stressful couple of months. However, sources close to Pete and Ariana insist that it was their haste and intensity that challenged them in the end, as it was simply “way too much too soon.”
Maybe it’s for the best, considering some of Pete’s comments over the last couple of months.
Plenty of Twitter users were disgusted at one of Pete’s SNL jokes about contraception at the end of September. The comedian told his castmate Colin Jost that Ariana Grande pays $60,000 in rent each month, while his contribution is keeping the fridge fully stocked. Jost pointed out that a man “doesn’t always have to be the breadwinner in a relationship”, and Pete replied by saying “Goddamn right, he does not. Last night I switched her birth control with Tic Tacs.”

The response on Twitter was generally “Uhhhh Pete Davidson just made a joke about switching Ariana Grande’s birth control with Tic Tacs so she can’t leave him…” “Let’s not normalise that disgusting manipulation.”
A few weeks prior, Pete spoke out about that nauseating incident with the bishop at Aretha Franklin’s funeral. The bishop, Charles H Ellis III, told Grande that her name resembled something off of a Taco Bell menu before proceeding to inch his fingers towards her breast while he was speaking on stage. Meanwhile, Grande was getting ogled by those sitting behind her, including Bill Clinton.
Ariana stayed quiet about the incident, but Pete decided to speak out about it a few weeks later. In an hour-long interview with Howard Stern, Pete said that he “feels bad for” Charles H Ellis III, and comforted Ariana Grande by telling her that she’s “so hot” that people even want to look at her inappropriately at a funeral. Not only is that an extremely odd thing to say to your girlfriend, it’s also pretty offensive.

On top of those two comments, one of Pete’s comedy sets from 2017 resurfaced because it featured him joking about the bombing of the Manchester Arena after an Ariana Grande concert that year, which left 22 young people dead. Pete joked that the situation must have made Ariana realise how famous she had become, because “Britney Spears didn’t have a terrorist attack at her concert.”
Ariana later gave a statement to a fan, expressing how upset she was by Pete’s comments:
Regardless of Pete’s intentions with all of his previous comments, the impact was indeed pretty unfortunate.
