RTÉ Investigates: Travellers – Lives on the Fringes (RTÉ One, 9.35pm)
RTÉ spent six months investigating the reality of life behind the crisis in Traveller accommodation in Ireland today, with the findings documented in tonight’s show. Across Ireland, Travellers are at a huge disadvantage compared to the general population. They have an 80% unemployment rate, a suicide rate that is six times the national average and 25% of children living in emergency accommodation outside of Dublin are Travellers, even though the Travelling community represent just 0.7% of Ireland’s overall population. In RTÉ’s investigation, they highlight the conditions on unauthorised sites that Travellers live on – they are typically without basic facilities like showers, toilets and sometimes running water. As the housing crisis has worsened, so have the conditions that Travellers are living in.
