Princess Nokia accused Ariana Grande of plagiarising 7 Rings and it actually does sound a bit familiar...

What do you think?

THE FIRST THING that many of us saw when we woke up today, was the news that Ariana Grande had dropped a brand new single and a music video to accompany it.

Upon hearing the song which is entitled 7 Rings, I thought, “Hey. This is kinda familiar.” At first, I thought maybe it sounded a little bit like Formation by Beyoncé which features the lyrics “I see it, I want it [...] I grind ’til I own it.” It’s essentially the same sentiment – a very rich celeb flexing all of the wealth they have, thanks to us idiots who keep giving them money.

After one or two listens of Ari’s new song, I got on with the rest of my business. A few hours later, I can barely remember what the song sounds like, because Formation has been stuck in my head all day now. These songs don’t sound hugely similar and I hadn’t felt like I had cracked the Da Vinci Code or something from reaching the realisation that there was an overlapping theme in the two songs, but I still felt like I couldn’t put my finger on why Ariana Grande’s new song sounded so familiar.

As soon as I saw New York rapper Destiny Frasqueri (who uses the stage name Princess Nokia) upload a video to Instagram tagging Ariana Grande in it, it clicked.

7 Rings sounds pretty similar to Princess Nokia’s own single, Mine. Have a little listen to the two songs for yourself:

At present, if you Google the term “Ariana Grande Princess Nokia”, you’ll find articles from the Telegraph, Fader and Noisey comparing the song to Princess Nokia’s work. It looks like Princess Nokia isn’t too happy about this comparison.

After comparing the two songs in an Instagram post, Princess Nokia said:
Ain’t that the little song I made about brown women and their hair? Hmm..! Sounds about white.

What do you think? Is it a push?
