THE GENERAL ELECTION trail has been littered with campaign song stylings from rap to rockabilly.
What we really want to hear today though is a bit of righteous indignation from a non-political voicebox. Enter the good old-fashioned protest song and a Dublin band called Susie Soho. The chorus goes a little something like this:
Stand up, stand up, this is a call to arms/ Throw down, throw down and take back what we’ve lost.
We’re assured by lead singer Tony Fitz that it’s not a literal call to arms but a bid to “encourage people to vote”.
The band are giving the song away as a free download for election week. Link: http://bit.ly/SSohoStandUp
The video makes pointed use of Green Party deputy Paul Gogarty’s expletive-laden rant to Emmet Stagg in the Dail. The audio isn’t used but you don’t need to be a fluent lipreader to see what he’s mouthing… (around 1:10 in)
