A Dublin comedian drafted her dad in to explain aul fella language

“What you do know from grand is that he doesn’t want to talk to you and he’s trying to get rid of you”

“SO, AUL FELLAS. They’re great, but sometimes they can be hard to understand so I’m here to help with a few tips…”

Comedian Emma Doran drafted her dad James in for a sketch to help the public with some basic auld lad language last night:

The word grand has a multitude of possible meanings, depending on tone, including:

“What you do know from grand is that he doesn’t want to talk to you and he’s trying to get rid of you”

While “tell your mother Coronation Street is on” means one thing, and one thing only:

“Now what this really means is that he wants to watch Coronation Street but he doesn’t feel able to admit that he’s actually a fan of the soaps – so just leave him be and just play along.”

And some guaranteed techniques to get him to swiftly leave the conversation

The technique of talking about doctor’s appointments, periods etc might make him slowly back out of the room.

Solid aul fella translations there.
