IT’S BEEN ALMOST four months since Swedish DJ, Avicii, was found dead from an apparent suicide in Muscat, Oman.
The 28-year-old, who had suffered ill health for several years prior to his untimely death, was laid to rest in Sweden in June, and last night, the artist was honoured at the Swedish Rockbjörnen ceremony in Stockholm.
Fans voted in their thousands in order to see the late artist’s track ‘Without You’ secure the Song of the Year award – an accolade that Avicii’s father accepted on his behalf last night.
Addressing the audience, Klas Berling expressed gratitude that his son’s artistry was recognised on a global scale, and thanked everyone involved in honouring his child.
I am happy to have been given the opportunity to be here tonight to say thank you for this amazing award that you have rewarded Tim and Sandro [Avicii’s collaborator] and to every one of you who has voted for ‘Without You’; an amazing song.
In the days and weeks that followed Avicii’s death, fans and industry peers posted tributes and shared memories of the DJ – expressions of respect that Klas said meant a great deal to his family during their time of mourning.
But also, and perhaps foremost, to say thank you for all and every amazing tribute you have given Tim and his music. From all his fans and others, from churches, schools, festivals and so many more.
This was the first time that Klas, who released a brief statement six days after his son’s passing, has made a public appearance since the death of his son.
Concluding the speech, he reiterated his gratitude.
It’s been almost incomprehensible and it has warmed our hearts, all of the family, during this hard time – so again, a big thank you to everyone.
You can have a listen to the song here.
